Performance coaching: what it is and when you need it

You’re already good at what you do. That’s usually when progress stalls, because what got you here was effort, and effort has a ceiling.

I’ve coached leaders since 1998. Most come to me when effort stops working. Here’s what performance coaching is and how to tell if you need it.

What a performance coach does

A performance coach works on the person who does the job: your energy, health, focus, decisions and the way your week runs. Then we measure whether it’s working.

  • Life coaching looks at direction and balance across your whole life.
  • Executive coaching looks at leadership, your team and business results.
  • Performance coaching looks at the engine underneath both. Sleep, training, stress, focus, habits.

The research on coaching at work is encouraging. A meta-analysis in the Journal of Positive Psychology found significant positive effects on performance, wellbeing, coping, work attitudes and goal-directed self-regulation, with the largest effect on setting goals and following through (Theeboom et al., 2014).

Signs you need it

  • You know what to do and it isn’t happening
  • Your energy is gone by 15:00, and coffee is the plan
  • Training, sleep and food are the first things to go when work gets busy
  • You restart the same goals every quarter
  • The business depends on you, and you’re not sure how long you can keep this pace

How it works with me

  1. Audit. We measure where you are: blood work through Orba Health, fitness testing, sleep, and how your week actually runs.
  2. Install. We put in the few systems that matter most, built around your diary and travel.
  3. Execute. You run it. I’m in the background with weekly check-ins and a private channel.
  4. Compound. Every 90 days we review the numbers and raise the standard.

How many more quarters are you willing to restart?

What to look for in a performance coach

  • A recognised credential. I’m ICF-certified.
  • Experience with people in your situation, not just athletes or beginners.
  • A clear way of measuring progress.
  • Honesty about limits. Coaching isn’t medical treatment, and a good coach works alongside your doctor.
