Your team copies how you run yourself. If you’re exhausted, reactive and always late, that becomes the culture.
Nobody runs your sleep, your diary or your temper for you. That’s self-leadership: managing your own energy, attention, standards and decisions, so you’re worth following on a hard week.
After 30 years in health and performance, I look at 6 areas.
1. Awareness
Start with your numbers: sleep, energy across the day, training, the hours you spend on real work versus noise. Many leaders have never measured them.
2. Behaviours
What you actually do, day to day. Write down your first 90 minutes of a normal day and your last 90. That’s where your behaviours live.
3. Consistency
The standards you keep on a bad week. 2 training sessions. A fixed wake time. One focused block before email. Keep them small enough to hold.
4. Performance
Your body is the platform everything runs on. Sleep, training, fuel and recovery come first, because every decision after that depends on them.
5. Strategic action
The 3 outcomes that matter this quarter, and the time blocked to move them. Everything else is delegated, delayed or dropped.
6. Control your environment
By evening you’re tired, so let the environment do the work. Phone out of the bedroom. Gym bag in the car. Meetings capped at 30 minutes. Design the room so the right choice is the easy one.
Where to start
Pick the weakest of the 6. Set one standard for it this week, put it in the calendar, and review it on Friday. Add the next one when it runs on its own.
Install. Execute. Compound.
